The Slender Man

In light of the recent, very disturbing Wisconsin stabbing of a young girl in an effort to meet The Slender Man, it seems everyone is thinking the same thing: who is Slenderman? Two 12-year-old girls lured a friend out to play with one very frightening thought in mind. Their plan was to kill their friend in order to meet Mr. Slenderman. One of the girls was quoted saying that they had to kill this girl because you can only meet SM by killing someone.

When something like this happens, I don’t mean to put this lightly, but it takes the fun out of it. Horror lovers like me want to believe that Slender Man is lurking out there somewhere. When tragedy takes place, we’re taken from the realm of don’t want to be in the dark alone to actually being scared. The chilling article from the Huffington Post discusses the details of the horror movie-like plot.

Slender Man folklore — as it were — seems to stem from a meme that was first seen in 2009. The short time span in which Slenderman has been “alive” is alarming due to the notoriety it has gotten. Slender Man’s official page details this creature — man or woman… or neither — to have a tall, thin build, long, skinny arms and legs, and perhaps a white hood where the head should be. There are also reports of tentacles that come from the back, but nobody seems to know for sure. The Slender Man is known best for making children disappear. What happens to them after he appears is unknown.

Slender Man Sighting

SM has been recognized by the media in some surprising places. Minecraft’s Enderman was named as such due to the strong resemblance recognized by players and Slenderman fans alike. The 2011 film Grave Encounters features a number of terrifying monsters. One of them credited simply as the Tongueless Demon looks the way Slenderman might if he took off his suit.

The Tall Man, a 2012 flop starring Jessica Biel, is about a small town grieving from the disappearance of several children. They blame it on the titular local legend The Tall Man. While Slenderman is never directly referenced, it’s easy to make the connection.

Not really all that surprising was when he made an appearance on Supernatural as Thinman.

As much as I hate to end this on a sad note, my heart goes out to the families involved in this Slender Man Stabbing ordeal. Kids have incredible imaginations, but it’s also important to recognize what’s right and wrong. I wish those involved the best of outcomes.
